Tutorial For Unity: Making 3D Terrain
In this tutorial I'll show you how to create 3D terrain in Unity's terrain editor.
Terrain made with basic steps in a few minutes
Step 1: Create a new Unity project by clicking 'File > New Project...'
Step 2: Create a new scene by clicking 'File > New Scene' to clear any previously opened scene. Then save the scene by choosing 'File > Save Scene as...' and name it whatever you like. I'm just naming mine "Main" for simplicity.
Step 3: In the hierarchy panel on the left hand side, right click and choose '3D Object > Terrain'. Now it's time to set up our terrain.
Note: The default settings under the tab (above) is good enough for this tutorial.
Under the paint texture tab, choose the option 'Edit Textures...' and choose 'Add Texture...' to add the above provided texture. Do not worry about providing a normal map as it is unnecessary for this tutorial. The default tiling options are Ok as is. Click 'Add' when you're done to save to and tile the terrain.
Choose the first tab of terrain as shown above. Adjust the brush size to cover a desired area and the opacity is how fast the terrain will be lifted once you click & drag. If you desire you can turn off Lightmap Static as it is not important for this tutorial.
Step 4: Drag and experiment. Hooray! You are done! You can now make basic 3D terrain on the go with Unity's terrain editor.
Experimenting with terrain editor. (imagine putting a player through this!)
